A Russian court on Friday extended WNBA star Brittney Griner’s remand for a month, her lawyer said.
Ms Griner, one of women’s basketball’s most decorated athletes, has been detained in Russia since mid-February on drug charges that could carry up to 10 years in prison. The charge is based on allegations that she had vape cartridges containing hash oil in her luggage.
“She is fine, there are no complaints,” said Aleksandr Boikov, Ms Griner’s lawyer. He also said the court dismissed his appeal to have Ms Griner placed under house arrest.
While Ms Griner was arrested a week before Russia invaded Ukraine, Russian authorities did not reveal her detention until days after the war began, raising fears she could be used as currency of exchange in the global crisis.
