The “highly risky” attempt shows the pressure on Russia to show progress, he added.
Ukraine has blocked Russia from crossing a key bridge in the country’s east, with Russia suffering heavy equipment losses in a ‘highly risky’ operation that shows the strain its military is under, intelligence says British.
The British Ministry of Defense mentioned Friday that “Ukrainian forces managed to prevent an attempt to cross a Russian river in the Donbass.
“The images indicate that while crossing the Siverskyi Donets River west of Severodonetsk, Russia lost significant armored maneuver elements of at least one battalion tactical group as well as deployed pontoon equipment. “
He said the losses were a sign of how the Russian military is under pressure to show progress in its invasion.
“Conducting river crossings in a contested environment is a very risky maneuver and speaks to the pressure on Russian commanders to make progress in their operations in eastern Ukraine.”
Russia has focused its efforts on eastern Ukraine after its attempt to take over the whole country was blocked in the face of strong Ukrainian resistance.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry on Wednesday released photos it said showed Russian equipment destroyed on the Siverskyi Donets River by Ukrainian forces.
Insider has not independently verified the photos that allegedly show the aftermath of the failed assault.
