Details: The Financial Times writes that Kyiv has obtained “very solid intelligence on the intention” of Russia to launch a new attack.
The Russian offensive will likely aim to capture the entire Donbass region and could start west of Luhansk Oblast near the towns of Kreminna and Lyman, where Russia has been gathering forces for several weeks.
The Financial Times also notes that Russia is strengthening its troops in southern Donetsk Oblast, with additional forces deployed in villages around occupied Mariupol.
According to the Financial Times, Russia’s objective is to launch the offensive before Ukraine receives Western tanks and weapons.
The unnamed Ukrainian military adviser said a new Russian attack would likely be carried out by elite units.
“They are real mechanized brigades even if they are less capable than they were at the beginning of the war. They reinforced the VDV [airborne] and marine units. They are not bus drivers and teachers,” he said.
Background:
Oleksii Reznikov, Ukrainian Defense Minister, said the country’s defense forces expected Russian offensive operations to begin before the symbolic date of February 24, but urged people to trust only information official.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Russians wanted to try to recover from last year’s failures in February, but Ukraine had to survive.
