Russian Defense has denounced Ukrainian strikes on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which it took control of last March. kyiv, on the other hand, claimed that the Russian army was responsible for strikes in this area.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that on August 5, “between 4:20 p.m. and 5:24 p.m.” (local time), Ukrainian armed groups carried out three artillery strikes on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the city of Energodar, both under Russian military control in Ukraine. “A total of 20 152mm shells were fired,” adds the same source.

“The shelling was carried out by one of the units of the 45th Artillery Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from firing positions near the village of Marganets, on the opposite bank of the Kremenchuk Reservoir, controlled by the Ukrainian army”, indicates also Russian Defence.

The Ukrainian authorities have accused the Russian army of being responsible for the strikes on the territory of this nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe. “Today the occupiers have created another extremely risky situation for all of Europe: they have twice struck the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia [Zaporojie]. Any bombing of this site is a shameless crime, an act of terror,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his daily video message on August 5.

“Despite the provocations of the Russians, the plant continues to operate and supply electricity to the energy system of Ukraine through lines in service. In accordance with their capacity, it was decided to unload and disconnect one of the reactors”, for its part informed the Ukrainian state company Energoatom, noting however that there were “risks of hydrogen leakage and spraying radioactive substances”.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) judged on August 2 that the situation was “volatile” and “more and more dangerous from day to day” at the Zaporozhye power plant.

As a reminder, the Russian army took control of part of the Zaporozhye region as part of its military operation in Ukraine.
