Roger Stone wants Governor Ron DeSantis to pledge not to run for president if he seeks re-election.
Stone has said that if DeSantis doesn’t sign up, he will run for governor of Florida just to siphon off the votes.
DeSantis has said he is running for re-election in 2022 and has rejected discussions of a White House candidacy in 2024.
Roger Stone, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, has said he will run for governor of Florida just to hijack Gov. Ron DeSantis’ votes – unless DeSantis pledges not to run for president in 2024.
“I think Governor DeSantis, assuming he runs for re-election, should commit to the people of Florida to serve the four years of a second term,” Stone told CBS Miami on Friday. “What I don’t want to see is that he gets re-elected and then immediately abandons Florida to run for president, especially if he runs against Donald Trump.”
DeSantis was elected governor in 2018 and is slated for re-election in 2022. He has said he is running for re-election, but the Republican star has also been touted as a potential 2024 presidential candidate, especially if Trump is not not in contention.
In September, DeSantis said any “speculation” he planned to run for president in 2024 was “purely fabricated.”
Trump has not officially announced a race in 2024, but has repeatedly teased the prospect, telling his supporters they would be “very happy” with his decision.
Stone told CBS’s Jim DeFede that he believes DeSantis, if re-elected, should remain governor and not run for president even if Trump decides not to run.
“I just don’t think Florida should be a stepping stone to the president for anyone,” he said.
Stone said that if he ran against DeSantis, it wouldn’t be because he thinks he can actually win the race, but because he could run as a Libertarian and get votes from DeSantis.
“The people who love Ron DeSantis the most are of course the ones who have never met him,” he said. “I don’t think I would need to get a lot of votes to change the results of this race.”
Stone also targeted DeSantis earlier this week, threatening to run against him if the governor did not audit the 2020 Florida election, a state Trump won.
“If Gov. Ron DeSantis doesn’t order a full audit of the 2020 Florida vote, I might be forced to seek the Libertarian Party’s nomination for governor in 2022. And Ron can say goodbye to his cocky Yalie ass # DefendFlorida, “Stone wrote on his Telegram Channel on Sunday.
Stone was convicted of seven felony counts in 2019, including making false statements to the FBI, witness tampering and obstructing justice. Trump commuted his sentence to 2020.
