Richard Ratcliffe, the husband of detained Iranian-British binational Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, must end his hunger strike after 21 days.
Ratcliffe said he told his wife he would end the protest on Saturday and go to hospital later for a full checkup.
He told his supporters on the Free Nazanin Twitter account: “Today I promised Nazanin to end the hunger strike. Gabriella needs two parents. Thank you all for your immense attention over the past three weeks.
“The last act of the hunger strike will be our patchwork event in front of the Foreign Ministry at 1:30 pm, then I will go to the hospital for a full check-up. Thank you for keeping our family in the light.
Ratcliffe started the protest outside the Foreign Office in central London last month and endured nearly three weeks in the latest attempt to force the UK government to bring his wife home.
He was joined in a vigil Friday by his seven-year-old daughter Gabriella and supporters, who gathered in solidarity with Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
But the allies had started to worry about his health, fearing that he would be permanently injured.
Speaking on Thursday, Ratcliffe said: “I think there is a basic medical limit to the length of a hunger strike. I made a promise to Nazanin, I made a promise to my family, mom in particular, and to family doctors, that I wouldn’t go too far.
“But yeah, I don’t think we come away with our heads held high feeling like it’s all settled.”
Middle East Minister James Cleverly met with Ratcliffe this week to discuss the current situation regarding his wife’s detention in Iran, where she has been held since 2016 – over 2,000 days.
After the meeting, Ratcliffe said he felt ‘deflated’, adding: ‘If I’m being honest it was like, you know, perfectly nice, sincere, caring, everyone in the room caring. But you know we’re still stuck in the same status quo.
“We are still stuck in the same issues that caused us to end up on a hunger strike. “
Throughout his nearly three-week hunger strike, he called on the British government to pay a debt of £ 400million to Tehran, dating back to the 1970s. British debt is recognized as a precondition for the release of Zaghari-Ratcliffe, as well as other detainees.
