Raytown gun store owner reacts to congressional passage of gun safety bill

Steve Brackeen is normally all smiles, but if you want to get this gun shop owner fired up, just start talking about gun rights. “I believe that every American has the right, as the Second Amendment says, to protect themselves,” said Brackeen, owner of Blue Steel Guns & Ammo. This latest federal gun safety bill will not take away the right to own handguns or even address the issue of automatic weapons. “I’m comfortable with what happened,” Brackeen said. One of the biggest parts of this new legislation is to ensure that firearms do not end up in the hands of people who could harm the public or themselves. This is something Blue Steel staff say they have always done. They said the policies are not much different from what was in place before. “I even have a list in the registry, where the parents called and said, ‘My son is crazy. My husband is crazy whatever it is, you can’t sell them a gun. We keep that in our registry. If any of those people come in, we deny them a gun sale,” Brackeen said. Brackeen said most legal gun owners are responsible people. He said the Laws can help, but ultimately you can’t legislate against random acts of violence.” A car salesman sells you a car, that doesn’t mean you’re a good driver, right? They have no control over that. So all you can do is preach and teach about safety and it’s up to each individual how they use that knowledge,” Brackeen said.
