RATP blames abandoned packages for the deterioration of the punctuality rate

The RATP mentions “70% growth in abandoned packages” in the month of October, compared to the same month in 2022. Other reasons are put forward, such as the aging of infrastructure.

The regularity of the Parisian metros is going through a phase “difficult” particularly because of the “resurgence of abandoned packages”, said RATP on Wednesday, November 15. Several lines did not reach the offer ordered by Ile-de-France Mobilités (IDFM), the organizing authority for transport in the Ile-de-France region in September. IDFM establishes a monthly report on the punctuality of Transilien, RER and metro lines, operated by various operators including RATP.

The September results, published Saturday on the website of the organizing authority (pdf link), reveal that peak hour performance deteriorated on certain Paris metro lines during the month in question. Even if since the start of the year, assures Agnès Ogier, head of the rail network at RATP, the regularity of the metros “is in a positive dynamic”.

The age of the infrastructure

The RATP thus cited a figure for the month of October that partially explains the recent problems: “70% growth in abandoned packages”, compared to October 2022. The Régie identified 325 reports and interventions linked to this phenomenon last month, compared to 190 a year ago, she added. “Obviously we have other difficulties”, recognized Agnès Ogier, the deterioration of the punctuality rate also being the consequence of the age of the network infrastructures, citing line 8 equipped with equipment “who is 25 years old, 30 years old”.

On this line, the organizing authority observed in September a punctuality rate of 84.85%, or 11.65 points less than the ordered offer. The much criticized line 13 is among the poor performers with a punctuality rate of 87.06% in September, i.e. a delay of more than 9 points on its objective defined in the contract signed by RATP and IDFM.

Line 6 – currently being modernized with the gradual arrival of old trains from line 4 – is the last on the list with a peak hour regularity of 84.32%, more than 12 points behind the objectives of IDFM. Lines 3 and 3 bis also showed a disappointing punctuality rate, stuck below 90%.
