Lola Mitchell, pioneering rapper and former member of Three 6 Mafia, died on Sunday. She was 43 years old.

Mitchell, also known as Gangsta Boo, recorded her first song with Three 6 Mafia, “Cheefa Da Reefa”, at the age of 14 and officially joined the group a year later in 1994. She became an influential member of Memphis rap. scene, recording with up-and-coming artists and stars after leaving Three 6 Mafia in the early 2000s.

She has worked with iconic rappers such as Lil Jon, TI, Killer Mike and Gucci Mane and featured on a recent Latto track which premiered just a few weeks ago.

“I would honestly say that I have to respectfully and humbly admit that I’m the role model,” she told Billboard in December. “I hear my cadence in a lot of male and female rappers. …I used to run away from it. Before, I wouldn’t even give myself flowers because I was so low key and so humble. It’s time to claim what’s mine.

Three 6 Mafia founding member DJ Paul posted a tribute to Mitchell on Instagram.

His cause of death is unknown.
