Giovanni van Bronckhorst is set to be announced as Rangers’ new manager with the club confident of making a deal on Thursday. Ranger officials met the 46-year-old in Amsterdam on Tuesday to discuss conditions following an initial meeting in London on Saturday.
The Scottish Premiership champions were on the hunt for a replacement head coach after Steven Gerrard joined Aston Villa last week after three years at the helm. Former Rangers player Van Bronckhorst, who managed Feyenoord from 2015 to 2019 and most recently was the head coach of Guangzhou city, is said to be the club’s first choice for the role.
Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson led the negotiations and it is understood that the club and Van Bronckhorst are happy with the way they are progressing, with a deal imminent.
Van Bronckhorst played for the Rangers between 1998 and 2001, winning two league titles – including a domestic treble in 1998-99 – and making 117 appearances. He also won 106 caps for the Dutch national team during a very successful playing career which included stints at Arsenal and Barcelona.
Rangers are four points ahead of Celtic at the top of the Premiership table after 13 games. Their next match on Sunday is a Scottish League Cup semi-final against Hibernian at Hampden Park.
Assuming a deal is struck and announced with Van Bronckhorst before the weekend, the semi-final would still be unlikely to be his first game in the lead. The Rangers are currently led by an interim coaching team, including David McCallum and Jermain Defoe, while the management post remains vacant.
Rangers’ next game after this weekend is a Europa League group game in Ibrox against Sparta Prague next Thursday. Next come the league matches at Livingston and Hibernian. The club were keen to quickly put in place a new manager with a Champions League qualification, almost certain if he retained his title this season.
