Ralf Rangnick’s plans to stay at Manchester United in a consultancy role are in doubt, with his interim management tenure taking another disappointing turn.
A 1-1 draw at home to Leicester again reduced United’s chances of finishing in the top four as Rangnick’s strikerless formation failed to pick up three points.
The sporting giants are, shockingly, in their fifth year without a trophy, as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Middlesbrough, before leaving the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid.
Rangnick took over as interim manager in December, replacing the sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who had suffered a series of humiliating results.
The German was appointed until the end of the season with a statement from the club saying: “After this period, Ralf and the club have agreed that he will continue in a consultancy role for another two years.”
However, that now looks doubtful, with The Sun reporting that Rangnick can only be offered a few days a month of work as an adviser.
The 63-year-old was believed to have his eye on the opening as the club’s director of football but could now see his post downgraded even below the initial consultant role.
Rangnick was expected to recommend changes to the club at the end of the season, but United’s transfer team are said to have their own ideas.

The club are currently in the hunt for a new manager with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag emerging as the new favourite, followed by Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino.
The duo appear to be prime candidates for the job, but it seems far less certain that Rangnick will work above them.
