Newcastle v Man United: team news

Newcastle are hoping to have Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth available after the illness for Manchester United’s visit.

Manquillo missed Sunday’s 4-0 loss to Manchester City, for which Krafth was an unused replacement, but both are expected to be in great shape.

Jonjo Shelvey, who also sidelined the weekend with groin and hamstring strain, will be assessed, but Jamal Lewis will likely miss the entire party schedule, joining Federico Fernandez and Paul Dummett on the sidelines.

United are set to end a forced 16-day Covid break with only injured Paul Pogba unavailable.

Raphael Varane and Edinson Cavani could feature for the first time since their injury in a Champions League group match at Atalanta on November 2.

Anthony Martial and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are also expected to be in good shape after missing United’s last game with injury, a 1-0 win at Norwich on December 11.

Newcastle v Man United: what has been said?

Eddie Howe has challenged his Newcastle players to make new memories in the club’s rivalry with Man United.

He said: “There are a lot of memories that come to mind from those games. Newcastle tended during this time to have memorable games against most of the teams, to be honest there are some defining moments that you look back on.

“I can imagine some of the goals and some of the scenes in my mind. It’s up to us to try to recreate that era, the offensive verve, the arrogance that this team had, the sparkle that the individual players had, but then the team took that identity back.

“It’s definitely something we desperately want to do, but we’re going to need a little time to see it. Right now we’re still making progress and we need to master the defensive side of our game before we make the transition to the team we all want to be.

Commenting on Ralf Rangnick, Howe added: “I know he has had a huge influence on some of the Premier League managers who are currently active and successful in the Premier League.

“He’s one of the people responsible for the culture change, I would say, who brought a lot of new ideas that a lot of people followed, a definite trailblazer in the game.

“He’s someone I’ve had a few conversations with over the years and someone I respect and admire tremendously.

“He’s going to bring his own way of playing – I’ve seen that in the two games they’ve had before – and they’re starting to reflect him and his personality, so I would expect a very tough game.

“I have a lot of respect for Ralf and his work.”
