Rajasthan Pradesh’s congressional committee on Saturday unanimously passed a resolution to make Rahul Gandhi the party’s national chairman, a state cabinet minister said here. The development precedes the start of the filing of candidacies for the election of the President of the Congress.

Rajasthan Food Minister Pratap Singh Khachariya said the resolution was proposed by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. He said: “The resolution to make Rahul Gandhi the national chairman of the party was passed… Everyone supported it by raising their hands.”

Khachariyawas said that “the right to appoint the president of the state congress and the members of the AICC was left to the high command of the party”. A resolution was also adopted in this regard. Party leader Ajay Maken, Elections Organization (PRO) Officer Rajendra Kumpawat, State President Govind Singh Dotasra and party members from different districts in the state attended the meeting which took place held Saturday at party headquarters.

Nominations for the position of Congress President can be submitted from September 24 to 30. The election, if necessary, will take place on October 17, the party said. State units had passed a similar resolution when Rahul Gandhi was elevated to Congress president in 2017. He resigned after the party’s debacle in Lok Sabha polls in 2019.
