Rafael Nadal has revealed he “feels good” despite his close contact with Matteo Berrettini, who withdrew from Wimbledon due to a positive Covid-19 test.
The Italian was one of the favorites for the title after reaching the final last year.
He had been training with Nadal on center court just days before he tested positive in pre-tournament training.
But the Spaniard insists there is ‘no problem at all’, before saying he is ‘sorry’ for his fellow pro, who had a good chance of reaching the final stages of the tournament .
“It’s hard to be in close contact when you’re outside, when you’re training,” Nadal said. “At the moment I feel good, no problem at all.
“The bottom line is that I’m really sorry for him because he was playing fantastically, winning two tournaments before the tournament started. He’s a very good colleague on tour. We know each other well.
“I know how sad he will probably feel today. I feel sorry for him. Let’s wish him a speedy recovery. He was unlucky, no doubt.

Despite a two-set lead, the 22-time Grand Slam champion struggled for the next two sets before ultimately winning 3-1.
And he admits it was a tough game due to his absence from the grass courts.
“Difficult, yes, but it was expected because I haven’t played on grass for three years,” Nadal explained.
“The positive thing is that I finished the game well. The last two games I raised my level without a doubt. It gave me the chance to finish with a victory.
“But, yes, a very positive game for me. Of course, there is a lot of room to keep improving, but I’m sure this game will help.
