DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday it had summoned Britain’s ambassador to protest what it described as a hostile atmosphere created by the London-based Farsi media. The move comes amid violent unrest in Iran sparked by the death of a young woman in police custody.

The official IRNA news agency reported that the ministry also summoned Norway’s ambassador to Iran and strongly protested recent remarks by Norwegian parliament speaker Masud Gharahkhani.

The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody after being detained by Iranian morality police has sparked unrest in Iranian provinces and the capital, Tehran.

Protests over Amini’s death have spread to at least 46 cities and towns across Iran. State television has suggested that at least 41 protesters and police have been killed since protests began on September 17. An Associated Press tally of official statements by authorities put at least 13 dead, with more than 1,200 protesters arrested.

Recurring clashes between demonstrators and security forces continued to erupt. A member of the Basij, a voluntary force of Iranian guards, was killed by protesters last night in Tehran, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday. Another Basij member, who had been in a coma since Thursday after street clashes, died in Urmia, West Azerbaijan province, on Sunday, IRNA reported.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry website said it summoned Simon Shercliff, the UK’s ambassador to Iran, on Saturday and protested the reception of critical Farsi media. The ministry alleges that news outlets caused unrest and spread riots in Iran at the top of their agendas.

Iran has said it views the news agency reports as interference in Iran’s internal affairs and acts against its sovereignty.

The crisis in Iran began with an outpouring of public anger over the death of Amini, who was arrested by morality police in Tehran for allegedly wearing her Islamic headscarf too loosely. Police said she died of a heart attack and was not abused, but her family questioned that account.

Amini’s death has drawn strong condemnation from Western countries and the United Nations, as well as demonstrations of solidarity abroad. Violent street protests erupted outside the Iranian embassy in London on Sunday, with stones thrown at police and five protesters arrested. A number of police officers were injured in the skirmishes, but none seriously.

Pro-government rallies were also held in several cities across Iran on Sunday. Thousands of people attended a rally in the capital’s Enghelab, or Revolution Square, waving Iranian flags. Some officials, including cabinet spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi, attended the rally in Tehran.
