In this period of inflation, will the price of fruit be the pleasant surprise of the summer? There shouldn’t be a shortage and prices are down. But producers remain cautious.
On the markets, summer fruits have taken over the stalls: strawberries, cherries or even apricots. The fine weather and the warmth of spring helped produce a good harvest, both in quality and in quantity. Something to please the taste buds and the wallet. “Strawberries, this year, they are super affordable, we consume a lot of them“, indicates this mother questioned on the market of Toucy (Yonne). Same reaction for the price of cherries. Last year, they were at nearly 17 euros per kilo. The frost had ravaged the crops, lowering the harvests and therefore driving up prices.
The year 2022 seems for now mark a return to normal, but producers remain careful because the season is just beginning. “We have our eyes firmly on the weather, that’s what will define this year’s production result“, reports Hanan Jabafifarmer. However, prices remain too high for many consumers. According to a study, 69% of French people regularly deprive themselves of fruit and vegetables to save money.
