  • The police chief whose orders allegedly delayed the response to a school shooting will join Uvalde City Council.

  • Peter Arredondo was elected three weeks before the shooting that killed 21 people, NBC reported.

  • Arredondo has served as Chief of Police for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District since 2020.

Peter Arredondo, the school district police chief whose orders allegedly delayed the response to the shooting at Robb Elementary School that killed 21 people, will join the Uvalde City Council, NBC reported.

Arredondo was elected to the Uvalde City Council three weeks ago, winning almost 70% of the vote, according to Uvalde Leader-News.

Although the Uvalde Police Department has since changed its story about what happened during the shooting at least 12 times, a statement Friday from Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw said the Arredondo’s orders had delayed police response to the incident.

McCraw said Friday that Arredondo, who oversees the six-officer police force at eight schools as police chief for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, believed the shooter had “barricaded himself” in a classroom. class and “that there were no more children at risk”. and ordered officers not to engage the suspect.

Meanwhile, the shooter continued to fire on a 4th grade class, eventually killing two teachers and 19 students and injuring 17 others.

“Of course it wasn’t the right decision,” McCraw added. “It was the wrong decision. There is no excuse for it.”

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District did not immediately return Insider’s request for comment.
