Afghanistan was rocked by its deadliest earthquake in decades on Wednesday when a 5.9 magnitude quake hit the east of the country, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring scores more.

The earthquake struck in the early hours of the morning near the town of Khost near the Pakistani border and the death toll is expected to rise as many houses in the area were built from materials vulnerable to damage.

The humanitarian disaster comes at a difficult time for the Taliban-ruled country, which is currently plagued by hunger and economic crises.
