Photos of the consequences in Turkey and Syria

Devastating photographs show the aftermath of a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria as the death toll continues to rise.

The death toll continues to rise following a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria early on Monday, which also generated dozens of powerful replicas.

At least 1,900 people died as a result of the quakes, Turkish and Syrian officials reported.

“Because debris removal efforts continue in many buildings in the earthquake zone, we don’t know how much the number of dead and injured will increase,” Erdogan said.

Around 2,470 people have been rescued from some 3,000 buildings that collapsed in the quake, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a televised address.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said alliance members were mobilizing support to help Turkey deal with the aftermath of Monday’s devastating earthquake. Erdogan said offers of help had been received from some 45 countries afterwards.
