Pep Guardiola issued another subtle warning to Jack Grealish and Phil Foden ahead of Manchester City’s clash against Leicester.
The pair played no part in City’s latest outing, a 4-0 victory at Newcastle, after apparently arriving in a recovery session unfit to train after coming out for a club after their 7-0 win over Leeds earlier in December.
The City boss has not said anything about the return of Grealish or Foden on December 26, but he has shed light on his and the club’s expectations of their players.
Guardiola said in his press conference: “These are not rules, I am not the police. I’m not saying what they have to do.
“Everyone is old enough and experienced enough to know exactly what to do. “
The manager, however, stressed the importance for players to continue to exercise great caution, given the recent increase in COVID-19 cases.
He said: “We are experiencing special circumstances in our lives, which we cannot live as free as in the past, due to the pandemic situation. Everyone should try to follow as much as possible. We are not alone in the world.
“We have to be careful, but you can take [care] and [still] become positive. We are exposed, so be careful. We’ve been talking about it for a long time. “
Guardiola was also asked about Ferran Torres and appeared to confirm that the Spain striker was close to a £ 50million transfer in January to Barcelona.
And he insisted there would be no hard feelings over the 21-year-old’s departure from his former club.
When asked if he would be disappointed to see Torres go, Guardiola replied, “Absolutely not.
“If you want to go because you’re not happy here, you think you’ll be happy somewhere else, you have to go.
“The career is short, one day it’s over. If he wants to leave, absolutely no disappointment. It’s his desire, I’m happy for him.
Guardiola added: “If we only had two or three attacking players then maybe Ferran would think he has a better chance to play and stay longer.
“I always have the feeling that when Barcelona or Real Madrid knock on players’ doors, it’s hard to say no. So hard. They are still the strongest teams in the world in terms of fashion, cities and many reasons.
“He’s from Spain, Barcelona hits and I understand why he wants to leave.”
