Pau Torres and Jurrien Timber wanted to resolve defensive crisis, £68m required for Erik ten Hag prime target, £80m expected

This summer could be Manchester United’s biggest for a long, long time.

Erik ten Hag’s arrival at Old Trafford is set to see the playing squad change massively with a number of ins and outs expected.

Ten Hag is unlikely to waste time and get straight to work in the transfer market

United have six first-team players out of contract, including Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard.

Many of them have already announced their departure or have been strongly linked with moves.

However, many other members of the current squad could also find themselves pushed out the door to make way for new players.

But who could replace them? Well, talkSPORT.com decided to take a look at the biggest Manchester United transfer rumours…

Ten Hag ended his Ajax spell early to start working at Old Trafford

During his press conference on Monday, the new Manchester United boss revealed that the Red Devils would be active in the transfer market.

Asked if recruitment is going to be key for United this summer, Ten Hag replied: “Yes, it is. Recruitment is an important part.

“I said that was the project, to bring Man United back to the top, but we also have to accept the current situation we find ourselves in. First of all, Man United belong to the Champions League, so it will be the first goal.”

But before all that there will be a huge exodus with the Red Devils preparing to wipe £80m from their wage bill, according to the Daily Star.

The likes of Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Dean Henderson and Eric Bailly will be moved on as Ten Hag looks to make his mark.

Torres has been amazing during Villarreal’s Champions League campaign

Given the Red Devils have conceded 57 Premier League goals – four more than Burnley – they would probably need to improve the defence.

The Daily Express reports that Torres’ agents are traveling to Manchester this week to negotiate a deal with the Red Devils for the 25-year-old to leave Villarreal and move to Old Trafford.

Despite reaching the Champions League semi-finals, the Yellow Subs have financial problems to worry about and they have put Torres up for sale.

He will cost around £45m but could be a central part of United’s defense for years and years to come.

Frankie De Jong

De Jong could be the player Man United need in their engine room

It’s no secret that the Red Devils would need to make major improvements in the center of midfield.

Liverpool and Manchester City are among the best midfielders in the world, unlike the Red Devils.

And they’ve been linked with a move for De Jong.

The 25-year-old made 59 appearances under Ten Hag at Ajax and was part of the squad that reached the Champions League semi-finals in the 2018/19 campaign.

Sport claim the Red Devils are the team most attached to him, but Barcelona want £68m for the Dutchman.

Timber could join Ten Hag at Old Trafford

Another player who worked under Ten Hag before that could go to United is Timber.

Journalist Jonathan Shrager reported that Timber’s agents were in Manchester to hear the Red Devils’ plans.

Timber made his debut through Ten Hag and he would add versatility to United’s defence.

Shrager added in a separate tweet that the Red Devils were favorites to sign Timber.

Lingard’s final season at Manchester United was a shambles

Lingard’s time at United is up and it looks like a move to West Ham could be in the works.

Sky Sports report that the Hammers have made ‘initial enquiries’ to see if the England man wants to return to the London stadium.

The striker has barely played for the Red Devils this year, and he will be leaving Old Trafford and looking to rebuild his career elsewhere.

Therefore, a move to West Ham could make a lot of sense for Lingard.
