The Kansas City Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins just over a week ago and making his first comments on the situation, quarterback Patrick Mahomes said the whole thing didn’t really surprise him. .

Mahomes spoke to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer on Wednesday and said the front office kept him informed of everything that was happening, including when Hill was cleared to seek a trade. Mahomes, however, told Breer he was surprised things had come to this.

“It surprised me even more every time we got to the point where we were really considering trading him,” Mahomes told Breer. “They kept me updated the whole time; I knew the overtime talks were going on. And then I found out when he got permission to look to be traded. But I mean, still, I I’ve played my entire career with Tyreek, so definitely there was a bit of a shock when he got traded.”

“At the same time, they kept me involved in the whole process, and I know we made a tremendous effort to try to keep him in Kansas City,” he said. “Tyreek, he’s a great player, he got what he deserved. I’m happy for him. And he’s in a place where he has a home and he’s closer to his family and stuff. So I’m very happy for him. We had to move on.”

Mahomes seems to have focused on him and moved on pretty quickly.

“We had to move on and try to get as much as possible for him and try to rebuild that reception hall,” Mahomes said. “And do it where we have the ability to go out there and compete every week, which I trust Brett Veach and Coach [Andy] Reid will do.”

CHEFS ARE CONFIDENT THEY CAN KEEP A GOOD THING LESS TYREEK HILL

OutKick previously reported that the Chiefs wanted to keep the wide receiver, but head coach Andy Reid said contract negotiations had reached a point where keeping him just wasn’t possible.

Mahomes told Breer that he understands getting as much draft capital and cap space as possible from the Hill trade will help the team move forward and that he is confident that the leadership of the team will allow the team to compete again at a high level.

He also said he recognizes that some things will be different this year.

“It will definitely be a transition year where we try to figure out how we are going to be successful with this team,” he said. “It’s going to be different from the teams we’ve had.”
