A firefighter was injured by debris and taken to hospital, Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost Sr. said during a Facebook live briefing hosted by Passaic Mayor Hector Carlos Lora.

Authorities said several structures were on fire in the building of Qualco Chlorine, a company that makes chlorine for swimming pools. The facility has a combined production space of 100,000 square feet, the mayor said.

A “portion of the building contained chlorine, which appears to be under control at this time,” the fire chief said. “We will be monitoring that as well throughout the night.”

Most of the building where the fire originated has collapsed, the fire chief said.

Earlier, Lora urged residents who lived near the fire to keep their windows and doors closed.

Passaic, a city of about 70,000, is about 12 miles from New York.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy urged residents to stay safe. “If you live nearby, keep your windows closed” he said on Twitter.
The state Environmental Protection Department was “monitoring air quality” to protect public health, says Shawn LaTourette, the Environmental Protection Commissioner.
New York City emergency management officials said city residents could see or smell smoke coming from the fire.
