According to the United Arab Emirates news agency WAM, the consignment was transported through the Rafah crossing point, between Egypt and Gaza and represents “the largest medical aid of this type provided […] in Gaza since the beginning of the pandemic”.
In a press conference held at the Rafah border post after the arrival of the cargo, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Development, Ghazi Hamad, thanked the United Arab Emirates for their significant assistance, calling them “brothers “. According to him, the delivery comes at a critical time, when the Gaza Strip is exposed to its fourth wave of contamination. He also thanked the Emirati leaders for donating medical equipment and establishing a hospital.
“This batch of aid from the United Arab Emirates has come at the right time to support the health sector and vaccinate students,” said former Palestinian health minister Jawad al-Tibi.
According to the latest figures, nearly 200,000 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded among the 2 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip since the start of the pandemic. A total of 189,473 patients were cured and 1,744 died. Of the entire Palestinian population (5.2 million), authorities reported 439,810 recoveries and 4,805 deaths.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview with Tass in November 2021 that deliveries of the Russian Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine had helped contain the pandemic in his country.
The first phase of clinical trials for a nasal vaccine against Covid-19 and its variant Omicron has also started in Russia. This serum, which comes in the form of a spray, can replace the conventional vaccine or serve as an additional dose. It could be available in the country within three to four months.
