Olivier Marleix says Les Républicains will be opponents of macronie – RT in French

At the end of his interview with Elisabeth Borne, the president of the group Les Républicains in the National Assembly assured that his party was going to be in the opposition. However, he stressed that compromises would be possible on certain texts.

The leader of the Les Républicains deputy in the National Assembly, Olivier Marleix, said in a press briefing on June 28, after his meeting with Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, that he had repeated to her that the right-wing party that he represents was an “opposition group” and that there was “no question of a coalition” with the Macronist majority.

The elected representative of Eure-et-Loir nevertheless qualified his meeting with the head of government as “an exchange of views […] useful”. “We are here to find solutions for the French, for the country,” he added.

He also stressed that on certain texts, Les Républicains (LR) could work with the macronists, such as on “the question of purchasing power”: “We insisted a lot on the fact that we wanted to give priority to the France who works, [à] all these employees or civil servants with modest salaries and who, today, have great difficulty in moving around, in getting to work, in coping with the cost of living, the cost of energy in particular.”

For Olivier Marleix, Elisabeth Borne showed a “willingness” to listen, judging this as “auspicious”, in order to find compromises.

At first glance, one of the compromises between the centrists and the LRs could be on the pension reform aimed at pushing back the retirement age.

Elisabeth Borne continued her negotiations on June 28 to allow the Macronists to govern, despite the absence of an absolute majority in the National Assembly where, for the first time in history, a woman, Yaël Braun-Pivet, should gain access to the presidency of the lower house.
