Former President Barack Obama wants to save Democrats from a landslide midterm defeat by appearing on TikTok with “painfully” corny dad jokes, critics said Wednesday.
Obama took to the normally youthful and hip social media platform to urge viewers to vote on “Under The Desk News,” which offers Gen Zers quick takeaways on current events.
In the skit, the former Free World leader sits under a desk with host Vitus Spehar and urges the TikTok star to come out and vote.
“Here’s the thing: you can stay [under the desk] for now, but when it comes time to vote, you’ll have to stand up,” Obama said in the video, posted Tuesday.
“You have climate change legislation on the ballot, you have gun safety. And, when we can elect more pro-choice members of Congress, we can restore [sic] Roe v. Wade as the law of the land.
Spehar then asks, “Is this the wrong time to say I voted for McCain in 2008?”
“Mmm…as long as you voted,” Obama replies with a smile.
On Wednesday, conservatives and online trend setters mocked Obama, calling him desperate, for appearing in the video.
“Obama has officially joined the Democrats’ new foolproof plan for whenever they need to advance an agenda. Collaborate with TikTokers…Collaborate with TikTokers”, Libs of TikTok tweeted.
Others said his one-liners just didn’t land.
“Ooof that’s painful” tweeted Andrew Gruela Food Network judge.
Stephen Miller, editor of The Spectator, joked that the ex-president’s performance was so bad it should be banned.
“Obama participates in TikTok, a legitimate threat to national security”, he wrote.
The video had garnered 1.4 million views on TikTok by Wednesday afternoon.
