A North Carolina teenager is fighting for his life after his father, a police officer, shot him in the head in an apparent accident Monday afternoon.
the The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting took place at their home. The father is an officer of near the Jacksonville Police Department.
Neither the 15-year-old nor his father have been identified, but oOfficials said the teenager had a life-threatening injury.
Onslow County District Attorney Ernie Lee said an investigation must be conducted before criminal charges, if any, can be determined.
“This is a tragic event, and this matter is still under investigation by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office,” Lee said in a press release. “Reports, statements and other evidence of the investigation will be provided to this office to determine what action, if any, will be taken. I remain in contact with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office in this ongoing investigation.
Lt. Christopher Funcke of the Jacksonville Police Department said the department is cooperating with the investigation.
“The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and the Jacksonville Police Department is fully cooperating with their investigation. We ask members of our community to keep our employees and their families in their thoughts and prayers at this time, ”Funcke told the WNCT.
The teenager is currently in a local hospital after being initially taken to the Camp Lejeune Naval Trauma Center.
