NHL COVID-19 2021-22 Case Tracker: Updated List of Players Who Will Miss Games This Season

| Breaking News Updates | News Today

The 2021-22 NHL season is underway, and although the majority of players are fully vaccinated – only Tyler Bertuzzi remains the most notable unvaccinated name – COVID-19 still impacts the rosters every night.

A number of league stars, including Patrick Kane, Erik Karlsson and, since November 3, Sidney Crosby, have tested positive.

Players who test positive are placed on the off-list COVID protocol list. It should be noted that other players could also end up on this list. Like last season, “COVID protocol absences” can be the result of a number of factors, including an initial positive test that remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is performed; compulsory isolation for symptomatic gamblers; mandatory quarantine as high risk close contact; isolation on the basis of a confirmed positive test result; quarantine for travel or other reasons.

What is the NHL’s COVID protocol in 2021-2022?

With a vaccine now available, the rules are a bit different from last season. A vaccinated player is described as anyone who is two weeks after the second dose.

Unvaccinated players are not allowed to travel to Canada due to quarantine restrictions in the country. Therefore, clubs can suspend players for inability to participate and require them to forgo one day’s pay for each day missed. Unvaccinated players are also required to follow the majority of rules that were in effect last year, including, but not limited to, wearing masks at all times when not on the ice; exercise or eat; keep 6 feet away; not to share rooms or spaces – such as cars – with other players.

Vaccinated players are only tested every 72 hours or if they show symptoms, while unvaccinated players should get tested every day. Players who test positive (one confirmed positive) and who show symptoms should self-isolate. They should remain isolated until at least 10 days have passed since the onset of the first symptoms, the symptoms have improved and are allowed by the medical staff to return. Based on symptoms (eg, cough, fever, chest pain), cardiac screening should also be performed and validated.

If they test positive and must miss games, the vaccinated players are listed as having sustained a hockey-related injury and are paid. Unvaccinated players are not paid.
