News anchor Don Lemon came out to CNN, he and the cable network announced Monday.
“Don will always be part of the CNN family, and we thank him for his contributions over the past 17 years,” the outlet said. said in a tweet. “We wish him good luck and we will encourage him in his future endeavours.”
In a statement posted on his Twitter accountLemon said his agent told him Monday morning that he was fired by CNN.
“I’m stunned. After 17 years at CNN, I would have thought someone from management would have had the decency to tell me directly,” Lemon said.
“At no time was I given any indication that I would not be able to continue doing the work I loved within the network. Clearly there are bigger issues at play. .”
Lemon had recently returned to the air after taking time off following sexist and ageist remarks he made on television about Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley.
News of Lemon’s departure came shortly after Fox News broke the news that she had parted ways with popular and controversial host Tucker Carlson.
