Newcastle new man Sven Botman is the ‘hard-working’ centre-back with the left-footed baton

Newcastle new signing Sven Botman has been hailed by Lille team-mate Jose Fonte, who told talkSPORT he was disgusted to see the Dutchman leave the French club.

Botman touched down in the northeast and arrived at the Magpies training ground on Monday afternoon for his medical, ahead of a planned summer transfer to the Premier League club.

Newcastle have agreed a £31.8m fee with Lille for the 22-year-old centre-back, who will become the team’s third major summer signing from Tyneside.

Eddie Howe has already added England goalkeeper Nick Pope to his side, joining relegated Burnley for £10million, as well as agreed a permanent £15million deal for Matt Targett after his successful loan spell from Aston Villa the last season.

And Newcastle have learned they’ve made another great acquisition in Botman.

Fonte has reserved praise for the youngster, with whom he struck up a solid partnership at the back to help Lille win the Ligue 1 title in the 2020/21 season.

Joining the Boot Room on talkSPORT, the former Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham defender said: “I have nothing but good things to say about him.

“A great guy, a great personality and a hard worker.

“He’s tall, he’s considerably quick, he has a great left foot, he delivers great balls between the lines and he reads the game very well.

“Listen, I’ve loved every time, every game that we’ve played together.

“He is good now offensively too, he has improved. He scores goals.

“I think he can handle the Premier League. Of course it will be a great test for him, but I think he can handle it, 100 per cent.”
