New York woman breathed at funeral home hours after being pronounced dead

An 82-year-old New York City nursing home resident who was pronounced dead was found breathing three hours later after she had already been taken to the funeral home, police said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at Water’s Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Port Jefferson on Long Island at 11:15 a.m. Saturday. She was taken to OB Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place at 1:30 p.m., Suffolk County Police said in a statement to USA TODAY.

At 2:09 p.m. she was found breathing, they said.

Police said Monday the woman had been taken to a local hospital, but provided no further updates on her condition.

The New York State Attorney General’s office told USA TODAY it is investigating the incident.

The nursing home could not immediately be reached for comment.
