The New York Times announced Thursday that it has hired Ken Bensinger of Buzzfeed News to “pioneer a new beat” covering right-wing media – the same Ken Bensinger, the Time omits in its ad, which first reported the Steele dossier.
New York Times Politics Editor David Halbfinger said in a splashy statement that Bensinger would join the Politics Desk’s “democracy team,” covering right-wing media as his full-time beat.

The statement provides an extensive list of topics and stories Bensinger has covered — from campaign finance to “political disinformation” to the finances of the Oath Keepers. Curiously, however, there is no mention of Bensinger as a senior reporter in the uncritical Buzzfeed story that injected the infamous Steele dossier into public conversation in 2017, with the headline: “These reports allege Trump has deep ties with Russia”.
The dossier was ultimately revealed to be full of misinformation, having served as the basis for the ‘collusion with Russia’ investigation that consumed the majority of former President Donald Trump’s term, ultimately revealing itself to be a hoax .
Bensinger never reported any follow-up stories on the subject of the dossier, per his byline on Buzzfeed, after it was confirmed to be misinformation.
Much of his work following this story has focused on foreign workers employed at Trump properties.
Halbfinger writes of Bensinger’s work:
This dig was tremendous preparation for Ken’s new beat, filled with people rejecting traditional narratives and questioning the institutions that sustain our democracy. Understanding how information is developed, disseminated and absorbed by the right is vital at this precarious time and requires a healthy dose of patience, empathy and understanding, as well as investigative chops, skepticism and tenacity.
Halbfinger did not immediately respond to Breitbart News’ request for comment, asking why he hid Bensinger’s involvement in what would be the biggest story of his career, and why he thinks the supplier of an element of disinformation as sinister would be a good choice for the Time“The Democracy Team.
Donald Trump Jr, who has found himself at the center of the ‘collusion with Russia’ investigation, told Breitbart News that the hiring represents the Time‘ refusal to correct its course after spending the duration of the Trump administration peddling the Russia hoax and a myriad of other little-in-fact attack pieces.
“This is just another example of the New York Times making it clear that they have no interest in covering conservatives fairly. Unfortunately, the former ‘official newspaper’ is more interested in hiring radical left-wing activists who act as rapid-response staffers for the Democratic National Committee, than true, unbiased reporters,” Trump told Breitbart News.
