‘Never heard of him’ – Dean Saunders aims cheeky jibe at Borussia Dortmund CEO after he was called an ‘arrogant idiot’ for his comments on Sadio Mane’s move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich

Dean Saunders has responded cheekily to criticism from Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, saying he “has never heard of him”.

The Dortmund chief took offense to Saunders’ comments on talkSPORT regarding Sadio Mane’s move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich, calling him an ‘arrogant idiot’.

Saunders’ comments on Mane’s move to Germany didn’t go over well

Saunders suggested the level of the Bundesliga was lower than that of the Premier League, saying: “Nothing against the club, they are a great club, but the league is far from a challenge for Mane.

“He will score goals. They win 5-0 every week, only one team can win the league.

“It’s not a challenge. He’s going to sit in his chair, light a cigar, he’s going to play for Bayern in third gear and he’s going to ride for two years and waste the best two years of his life as a footballer.

“At the end of his career, if he says ‘come and see my trophy cabinet’, the German league winner’s medal will be right behind it.”

However, Watzke was unimpressed, describing Saunders as “an arrogant idiot”.

He told Bild, Watzke said, “There are always arrogant idiots like this.

However Saunders sees the fun side of criticism

“As a board member of the European Club Association, ECA, I know that German football always has a good reputation.

“The English didn’t win any of the three European Cup titles last season.”

But despite being the target of criticism, the ex-Wales legend delivered a cheeky jibe in response to the comments.
