Navy Surveillance Plane Overshoots Hawaii Marine Base and Ends Up in Bay

A Navy Poseidon surveillance plane overran an airstrip on Monday approaching a Marine Corps base in Hawaii and ended up in Kaneohe Bay, a base spokesperson said .

None of the nine people aboard the Poseidon plane were injured in the incident, which occurred just before 2 p.m. Hawaii time (7 p.m. ET), Marine Maj. Jordan Fox said.

“All nine passengers on board the plane at the time of the incident have been accounted for and no injuries have been reported,” Fox said.

The plane was on approach to Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, which is on Marine Corps Base Hawaii on Oahu, Fox said.

A photo from the scene broadcast by NBC affiliate KHNL showed the plane in the water.

A spokesman for the Navy’s Third Fleet said people on board the plane were evacuated after it entered the water.

The crew is assigned to the Whidbey Island, Wash.-based VP-4 squadron, the Skinny Dragons, and was part of “a maritime homeland defense support detachment,” said the Navy Lieutenant Mohammad Issa.

Floating booms were placed in the water to prevent the spread of hazardous materials, Fox said.

An investigation is underway, he said.

The Poseidon is a long-range patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, according to the Navy’s website. It has two engines and is just over 129 feet long.
