A shooting at a business in western Maryland claimed multiple lives Thursday, police said. The suspect is no longer a threat to the community.
The shooting occurred at a business in the Smithsburg community, Washington County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Carly Hose told The Associated Press by phone.
The sheriff’s office released a brief statement saying the incident was evolving rapidly and that it would release information as soon as possible. He declined to specify the exact number of victims or the extent of the injuries.
US Congressman David Trone, a Democrat from Maryland, tweeted that his office was in contact with authorities in the area and actively monitoring the Smithsburg shooting.
News photographs showed a large law enforcement presence, including emergency vehicles at the scene.
Smithsburg, a community of nearly 3,000, is located about 75 miles northwest of Baltimore, not far from Maryland’s border with Pennsylvania.
