Mourners gathered at a funeral to remember Valentina Orellana Peralta, who was shot dead by Los Angeles Police in December while chasing a man in a department store. The 14-year-old girl died in a lodge in her mother’s arms.

“If it was a department store in an upscale neighborhood, would you have turned out like this?” I wonder if it had been in another area, another level of income, another race, would people see this as a tragedy? [rather] than a parody? Civil rights leader Reverend Al Sharpton said during a eulogy at Orellana Peralta’s funeral on Monday at the City of Refuge Church in Gardena, south Los Angeles.

“There is nothing normal about being pulled so recklessly that a young teenage girl seeking to live the American dream, who went shopping with her dear mother Soledad, maybe getting a Christmas dress, ends up dressing for his funeral, ”said Sharpton, after noting that he and others have been calling for LAPD reform for decades, since the police beat Rodney King in 1991.

“We have to make new laws, we have to make new formations,” urged Sharpton, who spoke praise at the funeral of George floyd, Stephane clark and others killed by the police. “They must be held responsible … His life matters to us.”

On December 23, the police shot and killed Daniel Elena Lopez, 24, who was shown on video for attacking people with bicycle locks at a store in Burlington in North Hollywood. As the cops shot him, a stray bullet pierced a locker room wall, police said, killing Orellana Peralta, who was hiding inside with her mother.

Reverend Al Sharpton and other mourners gather at the funeral of Valentina Orellana Peralta.

At a press conference a few days after her death, Orellana Peralta the family said the teenager loved skateboarding and I wanted to be an engineer someday. The teenager had moved to the United States just six months before her death, as her family left Chile in search of a better life in the United States.

“Valentina’s blood will not come out of the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department as long as they try to justify the unjustifiable actions that caused your 14-year-old angel to shed her innocent blood,” the civil rights attorney said. Ben Crump at Monday’s Funeral, addressing the parents of Orellana Peralta, Soledad Peralta and Juan Pablo Orellana Larenas. “Valentina is innocent.”

The LAPD and the California Department of Justice are investigating the shooting. LAPD officer William Jones, who shot dead Elena Lopez and Orellana Peralta, has been placed on administrative leave.

Protesters demand justice because Orellana Peralta demanded that the officer be fired and charged.

During the funeral on Monday, the lawyer for the Rahul Ravipudi family condemned the young girl’s life “taken unnecessarily … by the very people who were responsible for protecting her”.

“It will not be in vain,” said the lawyer, who is a child of immigrants from India. “We will expose this truth, hold those responsible for her death accountable, and implement changes that will allow all Americans, all immigrants and everyone to experience the same American dream of raising children in a place where we feel safe and protected. This is the cause of Valentina.
