‘Morning Joe’ absolves Hunter Biden cover, claims ‘we asked the questions’ ahead of 2020 election

This week, the stars of MSNBC’s flagship morning show ‘Morning Joe’ devoted a segment to what the media got the Hunter Biden story wrong in the 2020 presidential election while apparently trying to whitewash their own rejections of the New York Post report that blew the scandal wide open.

“Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski started the segment on Wednesday citing “new” Washington Post reporting on Hunter Biden’s multimillion-dollar business deal with a Chinese energy company, which his show didn’t recognize for nearly an entire week, according to Grabien’s transcripts.

Brzezinski awkwardly had to provide a recap to his viewers with a days-old report from NBC News correspondent Pete Williams. Notably, “Morning Joe” also ignored how The New York Times also checked out the controversial laptop days before The Washington Post.

After asking a guest when the media should have “more aggressively” pursued the Hunter Biden laptop story, co-host Joe Scarborough kept the focus on how the New York Post report has been “banned” on social media, calling it “horrible” rather than condemning the liberal media who chose to bury the scandal.

Scarborough also seemed obsessed with how the “Trump right” can use the Hunter Biden controversy as “whataboutism.”

“It also presents many on the Trump right with a wonderful opportunity to engage in whataboutism,” Scarborough said. “You look at the corruption of Donald Trump. You look at the crimes committed that it looks like he’s going to get away with… That doesn’t excuse the media for not attacking this story aggressively, it doesn’t. “I don’t excuse social media for banning this story during a critique during the campaign, but if people want to know why they’re pushing so hard, that’s one of the reasons.”

MSNBC analyst Claire McCaskill insisted voters who “voted for Joe Biden knew Hunter Biden was a problem,” linking the situation to the election of Bill Clinton, arguing that voters knew that was “not as pure as beaten snow”. She also called the Biden scandal a family “dysfunction.”

Brzezinski added: “If I remember correctly, we asked the questions, but it wasn’t amplified in the middle of a huge story like right now. You’ll see a right-wing outlet go crazy over Hunter Biden . It’s amplified completely out of the realm of what’s real. And I think that’s one of the issues as well.”

“I mean, during the election, I remember having conversations with, you know, people in the White House and people in the campaign and really, they’re chasing me for asking these questions! So this It’s not that we didn’t ask the questions, we didn’t just go crazy shouting them as the main story,” Brzezinski added.

However, a review of October 2020 shows indicates that “Morning Joe” didn’t exactly “pop the questions.” In fact, the co-hosts concluded from the get-go that the New York Post story was “fake.”

“When there’s a New York Post article that’s fake, it’s much better for Twitter to let people read the New York Post article and sit there and laugh at Hokie’s story. a computer repairman staring at a computer, saying, ‘Sure it looks suspicious to me, I’m going to call Rudy Giuliani! Let it out, okay!’ Scarborough urged the tech giant on October 15, 2020, the day after the story was published. “Because people will read this story and say, ‘This really is one of the dumbest October surprises I’ve ever seen.'”

On October 19, 2020, “Morning Joe” attempted to cast further doubt on the “fake” story by highlighting a New York Times article about the behind-the-scenes drama that transpired at the Post regarding those who would have wavered. to put their signatures on the report.

“It raises all kinds of questions about validity, about history, about the process that led to its creation,” MSNBC’s Jonathan Lemire said. “A lot of doubt has been cast on it by the Biden campaign and most of the mainstream media views this with a critical eye.”

Lemire continued: “The FBI is now investigating whether Rudy Giuliani, the President’s personal attorney who drove him here for the story by his own admission, he said he went to the New York Post with the story, that if Giuliani was actually being fed the disinformation by the Russians. There’s an investigation into that now.”

Brzezinski cited multiple reports of intelligence agencies investigating Giuliani’s dealings with “suspected Russian agents” as well as whether Hunter Biden’s laptop emails are “related to a smuggling operation.” foreign intelligence”.

Scarborough went on a lengthy rant declaring the story to be Russian disinformation, asking, “Why are we spreading lies here?”

“Because Biden said no evidence, the campaign said there was no evidence that a meeting ever took place. And the New York Post never asked the campaign about the critical elements of history… We are here in 2020. This is what it boils down to, America! Giuliani is feeding Russian disinformation to Donald Trump, and Russian disinformation to the New York Post! And that is so obviously misinformation that the person writing the story won’t put their name on it because they know it’s a lie!”

“Morning Joe” also invited former CIA staffer and NBC News analyst Jeremy Bash, who co-signed the infamous letter from former intelligence officials stating that Hunter Biden’s emails had “all the hallmarks classics of a Russian information operation”, to claim Giuliani was “ordering” directly from the Russian disinformation menu.

“So this looks like Russian intelligence, this looks like Russian intelligence, this looks like Russian intelligence, every intelligence official I’ve spoken to Mika says this is a Russian intelligence disinformation campaign “, Bash said confidently.

The following day, Oct. 20, 2020, Scarborough attacked then-President Trump for calling Biden a “criminal” as well as a reporter for not covering the laptop story, calling him “au beyond pallor” and “un-American”. He and Brzezinski went on to shame those who intended to vote for Trump in the election.

On Oct. 21, 2020, “Morning Joe” slammed Trump for calling on then-Attorney General William Barr to launch an investigation into the Bidens, with NBC legal analyst Barbara McQuade insisting he didn’t. there was “not there” for the DOJ to investigate. McQuade suggested that Trump was using the Bidens to distract from his own legal troubles. But unbeknownst to the public at the time, the DOJ had already launched a years-long investigation into Hunter Biden’s finances.

“He’s a man, Donald Trump, who is desperate. He’s a man who watches the polls. He’s a man who spends his days calling for Joe Biden to be locked up, attacking a 60 Minutes interviewer, attacking debate moderators, anything he can do to change the conversation about coronavirus is what will decide this election, perhaps at his peril,” said co-host Willie Geist.

On October 22, 2020, Geist denounced “news filters” that separate left from right, suggesting that GOP voters are not getting the truth from the president and right-wing news outlets.

“If you watch Donald Trump’s speech and you get all your information from these places, it all makes sense. Hunter Biden’s story makes sense. Everything Donald Trump tells you fits into the narrative you have been led to believe is true. If you look at it from where other people like us are sitting, it’s factually false,” Geist claimed.

Following the final presidential debate, “Morning Joe” said on October 23, 2022 that Trump’s attacks on then-candidate Biden over his son’s business dealings “have collapsed” with most Americans, pushing the idea that the claims had already been “debunked”. “

On October 27, 2020, a week before the presidential election, “Morning Joe” bragged about remarks by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who said Joe Biden’s “best moment” of the presidential debate was when he said the attacks on his family “doesn’t matter” and told voters that what matters is “your family”. Cruz also predicted that the Hunter Biden scandal would not move “a single voter” to Trump, which brought a smile to Brzezinski.

The following day, the MSNBC program highlighted a “somewhat unusual level of breakthrough” in the Hunter Biden story according to the results of a Politico poll, which showed that 50% of Americans heard “a lot” or “a little” talk about its business relations with China while 51% answered “not much” or “nothing at all”.

“To put this into context, this is a story that is typically experienced in the right-wing media landscape,” said MSNBC contributor Jake Sherman. “It didn’t make the front page of The New York Times or The Washington Post or The Wall Street Journal, but it kind of stayed in that universe. So I’d say that seems a bit high…it seems unusual. High for a story that somehow existed in an ideological sphere.”

Between Oct. 29 and Nov. 2, 2020, the day before the election, there was no coverage of New York Post reporting on Hunter Biden, according to Grabien’s transcripts.

Additionally, according to the transcripts, neither “Morning Joe” nor the entirety of MSNBC mentioned Tony Bobulinski, Hunter Biden’s former business partner who introduced himself and not only claimed he met the former vice president, but verified that “the big guy” referenced in an email who was supposed to receive a multi-million dollar share of a deal with a Chinese company was actually Joe Biden.
