More than a ton of cocaine was discovered in a container at the port of Le Havre on December 22. A preliminary investigation for international drug trafficking was opened by the specialized jurisdiction of Lille.
Based on information reported by Le Figaro and confirmed by AFP, more than a ton of cocaine from Colombia was seized on December 22 near the port of Le Havre (Seine-Maritime).
The seizure was carried out by the anti-narcotics office (OFAST), a unit responsible for coordinating the fight against drug trafficking on French territory. Quoted by the daily, the Lille public prosecutor, Antoine Berthelot, said that the increase in seizures illustrated “a surge of cocaine, a white tsunami which is hitting Europe and does not spare France”.
According to a police source interviewed by AFP, several traffickers have been arrested. France 3 reports for its part that the prosecutor’s office in Le Havre has relinquished the case in favor of the specialized interregional court of Lille, specializing in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.
This is not the first time that a cocaine seizure has hit the headlines in Le Havre. As recalled Le Figaro, customs officers had already seized in early December a shipment of nearly 1.5 tonnes of cocaine from Panama in a container in transit in the Norman port.
In France, 18 tons of cocaine were seized in 2021 against 13 tons in total in 2020, according to a report mentioned by Le Figaro and confirmed by AFP.
