EUCLID, Ohio – Grandparents Khadijah and Sparkle Darcel Guy spend a lot of time on the playground, with twin grandchildren, it’s part of their lives. But the couple were in the right place at the right time when they were at a Euclid playground a few days ago.
“Thank goodness we were in the right place at the right time,” said Khadijah Guy, EdD.
A few weeks ago, while watching their grandchildren play, Sparkle Darcel Guy spotted a little girl wandering around on her own.
“Suddenly I heard the little girl, she started crying and asking for her mother,” Guy said. “I ran to get her because she started going out on the street.”
The couple drove to the nearby Bluestone School, called the police and found the little girl had wandered off to a nearby daycare centre.
The little girl’s mum told us almost two weeks ago that she was grateful for the kindness of strangers and wanted to meet the couple. The couple saw our story, contacted us and a meeting ensued.
“They were guardian angels, real guardian angels,” said the young mother who does not want her name to be revealed.
Khadijah Guy understands how the young mother felt when she received the call at work about her daughter, as 26 years ago she received a similar call at work from her babysitter.
“It made me think of a child I lost to a child care provider,” she said.
She said her seven-month-old son Naquari died at the hands of a daycare.
“I just wanted to make sure this kid was safe,” she said.
Now the strangers are united by a bond that few can understand.
“It’s a blessing, a happy ending, all rolled into one,” Guy said.
