Mohamed Salah ‘can’t say yes and can’t say no’ when it comes to a contract extension with Liverpool but won’t let the situation distract from his team’s trophy chase.
Salah’s future at Liverpool has been one of the biggest off-pitch topics at Anfield during the season, with a new deal set to be agreed a long time ago.
The Egyptian’s current deal with the club expires in 2023, and Liverpool will be wary of letting him enter the final year of his contract which could lead to a free transfer.
Salah and his manager Jurgen Klopp commented on the matter, with the Liverpool boss trying to allay supporters’ fears, while Salah was much more enigmatic.
The 29-year-old has expressed his desire to stay on Merseyside, but insists things are out of his control, with his agent appearing to cover his tracks on social media at the time.
Salah was again asked to comment on the situation but insisted it would be selfish to distract from his side’s end of the season.
Asked by Sky Sports for an update, a smiling Salah said: “Well not much but honestly what can I say is there’s a lot of things people don’t know not about that, but i can’t be selfish now talking about my situation.
“We’re in the most important time for the team, so I just have to talk about the team, focus on what’s coming up with the team, and that’s the most important thing. is what I can say, I hope we will be more optimistic and then see what will happen.
“I can’t say yes, I can’t say no, but I’ve already said what I want many times, but again, I can’t really go into the contract now because it’s a very sensitive.
“The team needs to win, I can’t be like, just go to the news and talk about my contract, no, I just focus on the team and that’s it.”
Salah has been a revelation since his £36.5million move from Roma in 2017, lifting the Premier League and Champions League while breaking a number of all-time goalscoring records.
However, having your future in doubt can be a distraction for anyone, but not for Salah.
“No, not at all, not at all, [is is a distraction] I know I talk to the manager from time to time,” he said.
“I’m very professional, I know my job very well, I’m almost the first here and the last to leave but I know what I’m doing so it doesn’t bother me.
“I just focus on the team, that’s the most important thing for me, focus on winning trophies, and I’m giving everything for the club that I can.”
