Mitch McConnell declares $45 billion in aid to Ukraine ‘morally right’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) declared $45 billion in aid to Ukraine “morally right” on Christmas Eve.

“Continuing our support for Ukraine is morally right, but it is not only that. It is also a direct investment in cold, hard American interests,” McConnell wrote, posting a photo with himself and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Eighteen Senate Republicans, including McConnell, helped pass a $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill that contained $45 billion in aid to Ukraine. Passing the omnibus spending bill means America has given more than $110 billion in aid to help the country in its battle against Russia.

The 18 Senate Republicans include:

  • Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO)
  • Senator John Boozman (R-AR)
  • Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV)
  • Senator Susan Collins (R-ME)
  • Senator John Cornyn (R-TX)
  • Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR)
  • Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
  • Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK)
  • Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
  • Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS)
  • Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
  • Senator Rob Portman (R-OH)
  • Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT)
  • Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD)
  • Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL)
  • Senator John Thune (R-SD)
  • Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS)
  • Senator Todd Young (R-IN)

The omnibus spending bill not only grants aid to Ukraine, but also designates part of the nation’s capital as a Ukrainian Independence Park.

Former President Donald Trump, ahead of the omnibus vote, urged Republicans to vote against the gargantuan bill.

“Every Republican should vote no on the ridiculous and unacceptable $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill. It is a disaster for our country. And it also happens to be a disaster for the Republican Party because they can stop it,” Trump explained in a video posted to Truth Social.
