This year’s Miss World pageant, which was scheduled to take place in Puerto Rico on Thursday, was postponed after several people linked to the event – including 23 of the 97 applicants – tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement released hours before the start of the competition, organizers said they were postponing the televised final, citing “the interest in the health and safety of competitors, staff, crew and the general public” .

Representatives from Malaysia confirmed that their competitor, Lavanya Sivaji, was among those who tested positive. In a social media statement on Thursday, the Miss World Malaysia organization said Sivaji was isolated but “clinically well”.

Miss World Indonesia, Pricilia Carla Yules, meanwhile appeared to confirm reports that she had tested positive, writing on Instagram stories that she was “currently recovering” and “feeling much better physically and mentally.”

At a Puerto Rico health department press conference on Thursday, epidemiologist Melissa Marzán told reporters there had been 38 positive cases associated with Miss World: 15 staff and 23 applicants. She confirmed that the organizers of the competition, and not the island authorities, had made the decision to postpone.

The Miss World Organization has said the final will be revamped and staged within the next 90 days.

“As of (Wednesday), additional safety measures have been implemented in the best interest of the contestants, the production team and the spectators, knowing that the event has increased the risks on the stage and in the locker rooms, “reads a statement posted on the official Miss World website. media channels. “However, after additional positive cases were confirmed this morning (and) after consulting with health officials and experts, the decision to postpone was made.

Thursday’s final would have marked the culmination of weeks of Miss World events in Puerto Rico’s capital San Juan. In one of the many preliminary competitions, Olivia Yacé from Côte d’Ivoire was named the winner of the Top Model portion of the competition. This week Mongolian Rep. Burte-Ujin Anu won the Miss World Talent content and Mexican Karolina Vidales was named Miss World Sports.

Miss World 2021, the 70th annual event, was slated to be hosted by English singer and TV personality Peter Andre, Puerto Rican model Stephanie Del Valle and Mexican singer and actor Fernando Allende. Last year’s contest was canceled due to a pandemic, meaning 2019 winner Jamaican Toni-Ann Singh remains the defending champion.
