The two forwards, both signed under Arsene Wenger, are good friends off the pitch but after combining well at the start of their careers at Arsenal, have played together less regularly in recent seasons.

When they did, Aubameyang was sent back to the left wing often, but after impressing as a substitute in last week’s 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, Lacazette was deployed alongside the captain of the club in a 4-4-2 as the pair excelled in the 3-1 win over Aston Villa last Friday.

“I see very strong bonds on the pitch because of the relationship they naturally have,” Arteta said. “They have a lot of bonding, I think they like to play together and they show that they can play very well together.

“There are some things that are not negotiable, when you play with two players like that on a team. They need to understand that and if they’re willing to do it I think things can work out really well when they’re playing together.

Lacazette’s form is questioned by the fact that he is out of contract at the end of the season, as is academy graduate Eddie Nketiah, who was on goal against Leeds in the Carabao Cup in mid week.

If both players left, Arteta would end up with Aubameyang and young striker Folarin Balogun as his side’s only recognized attackers, but the Spaniard is relaxed about the situation.

“There is still a long way to go to have these conversations,” he added. “We see a player in his last year of contract like it’s a big rush and we’re not going to get anything, but we are still in control and the player is employed by the club.

“They are happy right now here and we will make all the decisions at the end of the season.”
