Mexican prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for a friend of the 25-year-old American woman who was found dead in the country last month. They are also working to ensure that the friend extradited to Mexico is charged, the Associated Press reported.
Shanquella Robinson, from Charlotte, South Carolina, traveled to San José del Cabo, Mexico, with six friends on October 28 and died in a villa the group had rented there a day later on October 29 .
Mexican prosecutors released a statement on Thursday saying Robinson’s death was the result of a “direct attack, not an accident,” and that a female friend of hers was linked to her death, according to CNN. They did not identify the alleged attacker, but added that he was a US citizen believed to be currently in the United States.
Daniel de la Rosa, Mexico’s Baja California attorney general, told local reporters they were seeking an extradition order for the woman linked to Robinson’s death.
De la Rosa said the death did not occur as a result of a fight, but due to the direct assault of the friend who allegedly carried out the attack.
De la Rosa has confirmed that the victim and friend are US citizens.
The group Robinson was traveling with left Mexico after his death, according to The Associated Press.
The new details contradict how Robinson’s friends initially characterized the death of the woman’s family.
“They said she wasn’t feeling well. She had alcohol poisoning,” Robinson’s mother, Salamondra Robinson, told Queen City News in Charlotte. “They couldn’t get a pulse. Each of the people who were there with her told different stories.
His friends’ account is also disputed by the death certificate which states that Robinson suffered a severe spinal cord injury and neck trauma, and died within 15 minutes of the injury.
Graphic cellphone video circulating on social media allegedly shows Robinson being violently attacked by another member of the group.
Robinson’s father, Bernard Robinson, confirmed to CNN that the person attacked in the video is his daughter.
The FBI’s field office in Charlotte has also launched an investigation into Robinson’s death.
