Six people were killed and 10 injured in an early morning mass shooting in the California state capital.

Police are searching for at least one gunman in connection with the murders in downtown Sacramento, which is packed with restaurants and bars, around 2 a.m. Sunday.

Officers were on patrol when they heard gunshots, according to city police chief Kathy Lester.

Upon arriving at the scene, they found a large crowd gathered in the street and six people dead.

No details were released on the casualties.

Ten other people, who were injured, took themselves or were taken to hospital, but no information was given on their condition.

Investigators do not know if one or more suspects were involved and have appealed to the public for help in identifying those responsible, including anyone with tapes of the shooting.

Chief Lester, who did not elaborate on the type of weapon used, described it as “a very complex and convoluted scene”.

She said it happened near the Golden 1 Center, an arena where the Sacramento Kings basketball team plays and concerts are held.

Shortly after the shooting, a video was posted on Twitter showing people running down the street and the sound of rapid gunfire.

Footage also showed a number of ambulances at the scene.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg wrote on Twitter, “Words cannot express my shock and sadness this morning.

“The number of dead and injured is difficult to assess.

“We await further information on what exactly happened in this tragic incident.”

He added, “Rising gun violence is the blight of our city, state and nation, and I support all actions to reduce it.”

Berry Accius, a community activist, said he arrived shortly after the shooting.

He said: “The first thing I saw was like victims.

“I saw a young girl with a whole lot of blood in her body, a girl taking glass away from her, a young girl screaming saying, ‘They killed my sister’.

“A mother came running, ‘Where is my son, has my son been shot?’.”

The shooting comes just over a month after a townsman shot and killed his three children and a fourth person before killing himself.
