Man United close in on Frenkie de Jong as €85m fee discussed with Barcelona could see Erik ten Hag hit his main target

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on prime target Frenkie de Jong in an €85m deal.

The Barcelona midfielder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford since his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag joined the Premier League side at the end of last season.

Reunion for De Jong and Ten Hag is on the cards but no deal has been agreed yet

And now it looks like a reunion between the two could be on the cards with the transfer reporter fabrice romano reporting that Barca’s asking price is close to being met.

After 65 million euros [£56m] verbal offer, the Spanish giants asked for 85 million euros [£73m] with add-ons being discussed to reach that figure and talks could be concluded this week.

The Dutch international moved to Camp Nou in 2019 for 75 million euros [£64m] but struggled to establish itself in Spanish football.

Instead, Academy graduates Pedri, Gavi and Nico have shone, meaning cash-strapped Barca see De Jong as their best chance to raise funds this summer.

Before moving to Spain, De Jong made his breakthrough in Amsterdam under Ten Hag, becoming one of the top talents in Ajax’s run to the 2019 Champions League semi-finals.

The 52-year-old is clearly still a fan of his wonderkid, with United desperate for reinforcements in the center of the field after losing Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata in free agency.
