An Ohio man who allegedly tried to kidnap a five-year-old girl has been seen in footage trying to stab a police officer with a pen while waiting for questioning.
Reid Duran, 35, was charged with attempted second-degree kidnapping, first-degree assault on a police officer and one count of second-degree escape on Tuesday, Xenia Police Division said in a Press release.
In the surveillance video, Duran is seen staring at a pen on the table before grabbing it and attempting to stab the officer.
The officer was able to defend himself against the attack and tackle Duran to the ground.
No one was injured and the 35-year-old man was taken into custody, police said.
Prior to the attempted stabbing, Duran was awaiting questioning following a report authorities received Monday at St. Brigid Schools in Xenia, Ohio.
At an open house for the upcoming school year, Duran claimed to be the parent of a child from the school.
The school principal thought Duran was acting in a suspicious matter. He then deemed the 35-year-old was not a relative and called the police.
After being interrogated and attempting to stab the policeman, Duran revealed many disturbing things during his interrogation.
Fox 19 reported that court documents indicate he attended the open house for the purpose of “attempting to find a small child for sexual favors.” He also claimed that a similar event involving himself had occurred in another city.
The suspect told investigators that he brought laced candy to give to a child in an attempt to entice a child.
Xenia police said there was no verification that Duran had candy on him that night, and that he was never alone with the five-year-old girl he had attempted to kidnap.
Duran also told investigators he had child pornography on his computer, court documents show.
According to Duran’s family, the suspect has never been arrested before and suffers from schizophrenia, NBC News reported.
After the interview ended, the suspect attempted to escape but was restrained again.
Police said they are still investigating the incident.
Duran is scheduled to appear in court on August 29. The suspect is currently being held without bail.
