Liverpool’s ‘exciting’ signing Cody Gakpo ‘thinks and plays like’ Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, claims ex-PSV Eindhoven manager

Cody Gakpo is expected to impress at Liverpool under his former PSV Eindhoven manager Twan Scheepers.

Despite being heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, the Dutchman has instead signed for their Premier League rivals.

The 23-year-old enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign with the Netherlands, and Scheepers believes he can carry that form to the Premier League.

Speaking on his development at PSV, the current FC Utrecht assistant coach told The Sun: “He was exceptional in many ways, but not just in his attributes or his skills.

“Everyone around him, he took them with him. He hasn’t changed going to the first team.

“All day he would be in conversation with you about how he could achieve his goals. When he was under ten, he would do the same right now at Liverpool.

Thierry Henry is one of the greatest players to ever step foot in the Premier League considering his achievements at Arsenal.

The Frenchman has had plenty of success on the left flank, with Scheepers believing Gakpo can play a similar role at Anfield.

He added: “When he receives the ball, you’re always on the end of your chair. There’s always something going on when he’s on or around the ball and it’s always forward.

“He’s an exciting player who will only get more exciting. He can adapt to become a striker but I don’t see him as such. Usually his best position is on the left side.

“I’m not saying he’s Thierry Henry because you can’t compare players but the way they think, the way they play with always running towards goal and smart in the penalty area, I can see why. he’s a big fan of his.”
