Liverpool ‘outgunned, down the ropes and second best to Fulham’ but Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah save the point as Aleksandar Mitrovic silences doubters of Premier League return

Liverpool were forced to come from behind twice and earn a 2-2 draw with newly promoted Fulham in their Premier League opener.

Whites striker Aleksandar Mitrovic continued his record 43 league goals as he put the hosts ahead twice.

But the Reds’ most expensive player in history, Darwin Nunez, netted the first equalizer from the bench on his top flight debut and then set up Mohamed Salah for the second.

Marco Silva’s Fulham were excellent value for their point and many would say the Cottagers deserved more against a lackluster Liverpool side.

Speaking on a commentary for talkSPORT, former Premier League midfielder Andy Townsend said: “Rarely have I seen Liverpool so overwhelmed in terms of energy in the Premier League, very, very rarely, but that’s what we saw in the first half.”

Townsend added full-time: “Liverpool got away with it. They scrambled a point by their standards.

“They will improve, they have to, but they were on the ropes for a good part of the game, they were second.

“They had one or two moments but never showed control and Fulham in terms of energy refused to be second best.”

Los Blancos came out of the blocks in the first half and scored the goal their dominance deserved when Mitrovic passed Trent Alexander-Arnold at the far post in the 32nd minute.

Townsend said: “Mitrovic attacked that so perfectly and Fulham deserved that lead. It’s a brilliant goal from Fulham.

The introduction of Nunez just after half-time did little to stem the flow of pressure from Fulham and Neeskens Kabano was so close to doubling the hosts’ lead when his ferocious shot blasted past the post.

But Nunez would have a say. After chasing a close-range effort on Marek Rodak, the Uruguayan tried the trick again and sent a cross from Salah into the net with a little help from Tosin Adarabioyo.

Townsend said: “It’s a bizarre goal actually – Tosin looks like he’s got the ball back on Nunez’s heel and the ball goes through the Liverpool man.”

The pendulum seemed to swing in favor of Liverpool, but it was Fulham who regained the lead, albeit controversially.

Mitrovic beat Virgil van Dijk in the box and crashed to win a penalty, although some questioned the number of contacts on the Serbian striker.

He duly converted the penalty in the 72nd minute, but Nunez and Salah again combined to rob Fulham of a dream start to the season.

This time it was Nunez who put it on the plate for Salah after a high ball fell into the box.

Jordan Henderson threatened to break hearts to the death when his long-range effort looked aimed at the top corner but bounced off the crossbar – and a draw was Fulham’s least deserved.
