Liverpool are optimistic Kalvin Phillips’ imminent move to Manchester City puts them in pole position to sign Jude Bellingham.
Bellingham turned heads across Europe after shining at Borussia Dortmund when he was just 18.
It is understood that Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of the England international, who could be Dortmund’s next star to leave in a big move.
Premier League champions Manchester City are set to announce the signing of Leeds star Phillips, suggesting they need a new midfielder less than the Reds.
However, The Sun reports that despite Liverpool’s ‘trust’ it is likely there will be a showdown between City and Liverpool over Bellingham.
The report adds that Pep Guardiola is also an admirer of the 18-year-old and hopes Bellingham’s friendship with new signing Erling Haaland, who played alongside him at Dortmund, can inspire him to join City.
The acquisitions of Haaland and Phillips are set to take their summer spending to just under £100million as City seek a seventh Premier League title.
Liverpool have also splashed the cash after landing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in a deal worth up to £85million.

It has been suggested that Bellingham will be Liverpool’s star signing next summer, with Dortmund feeling no need to sell him this summer having already pocketed over £54m for Haaland.
Phillips’ transfer, which is expected to set City back just £45million, has been branded a ‘nightmare’ deal for Leeds.
Former Leeds Women star Lucy Ward told talkSPORT: “As far as Leeds is concerned, it’s a nightmare, but one that all the fans have been waiting for.
“He did incredibly well. Marcelo Bielsa obviously took him further in terms of the position he played and I think Pep Guardiola will take him even further with the way he plays in this system. He’s the kind of player Man City will benefit from.
“Obviously you have Rodri playing there, but Kalvin is a good young English player. He’s obviously not as young as he used to be, but it’s a good move for him.
“I think it will have been a difficult decision, but it came at the right time for him.”
